Arts Club of Washington DC Collection
Commemorating a pivotal moment in American history, this intricate bronze bas-relief captures the pageantry, optimism, and architectural grandeur of the inauguration of President James Monroe. Featuring exceptional historical detail—from the majestic horse-drawn carriage to the early American flags—the artwork offers a timeless window into the founding era of the United States.
The sculpture also carries a fascinating modern history of its own. It was originally commissioned and installed in 1991 in the lobby of the prominent Monroe Building at 2001 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C., where it greeted visitors and diplomats for decades. However, as the city's commercial landscape evolved, the building underwent significant renovations in 2017 and quietly dropped its historical "Monroe" moniker, as noted in The Washington Post.
Fortunately, to ensure this monumental piece of presidential art remained accessible to the public, it was carefully relocated to a fitting new home. Today, it is proudly preserved as part of the Arts Club of Washington DC art collection. Housed in the historic Monroe House (which served as the executive mansion for President James Monroe for six months), the Arts Club provides the perfect, historically accurate backdrop for this celebration of our nation's capital.
