The Courtship

Quiet Waters Park Collection, Annapolis, MD

Installed in 1990 at the breathtaking Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis, Maryland, "The Courtship" is a magnificent life-size bronze sculpture featuring two impressive herons. Situated high on a bluff next to the park's visitor center, the artwork is intentionally placed to create a sense of discovery. As visitors climb the staircase from the road, the elegant wildlife sculpture is slowly revealed, perfectly harmonizing with its serene, Victorian garden surroundings.

The piece captures the birds perched delicately on a tree branch in a sweeping "S" shaped composition, producing a dynamic sense of imminent movement that engages the viewer from every angle. Upon its dedication, art critic Carol Falk highlighted the work in The Capital, praising its "precise realism" and the beautiful variety of textures and colors in the bronze. As Falk noted, it is just as captivating to explore up close as it is from afar, standing today as the "worthy guardians" of one of Annapolis's most treasured public spaces.
